Is facebook good at helping promote your business?

FootballHoward asked:

I recently created a website where I am selling an ebook and was wondering if creating a Facebook account would help me promote it. Anyone out there used it for promoting their business? I know a few people who have Facebook accounts and they really just use it to communicate with their friends.
The ebook is actually a beginning guide to football; It’s really for anyone looking to learn football, but I’m thinking it may be more geared towards women.

It depends on what your book is about. If it is something that appeals to teens and young adults Facebook would be one good way to market. If it has to do with technology or if it primarily entertains, Facebook also may be good.

You have to provide more information including your target audience and the genre of the book.

I think Facebook is a tremendous business tool. It is a great way to network and virally spread the word about a product or service. Use your personal profile, but share updates about the progress of your eBook or post the link to it and ask them to share with friends. If you offer a discount or special, post that.

You can also create a fan page for it, though those can be tough to continue to drive traffic too. Changes to fan pages don’t currently show up in the newsfeed, so you have to use your personal profile to drive traffic there. But on a fan page, when anyone “fans” you, it shows in their newsfeed, which helps it spread virally to their friends. You can also ask your friends to review your eBook and post it on the page. Again, their friends will see that.

Lastly, whenever you meet a potential referral source, customer or client in person, go add them on Facebook and because they’ll continually see your activity, you’ll stay top of mind with them and they’ll be more likely to come to you when they need your product or service.
